Design Tips for Facebook Timeline Pages

By guest contributor Ciera Holzenthal.

I manage a few different fan pages on Facebook so when I saw that the timeline for pages was launching, I decided to go ahead and get the switch over with! I definitely learned a few things during this process and would love to share some tips!

Customize App Icons

Unlike the old page design, the new page lets you upload your own custom app image, which is really great! Since these tabs are now smack at the top of you page, they can really look a mess if you don’t customize them… so customize your app icons!

Before Custom App Images:

After Custom App Images:

Example: After I arranged my apps in my preferred order, I designed three custom images that matched the look of my profile photo. I wanted these icons to be bold and simple.

Directions: For each app that you would like to customize, design one image (111 x 74 pixels), click the pencil icon and “edit settings.” Here you can update the “Custom Tab Image” and the “Custom Tab Name.” Make those changes and don’t forget to hit “okay” to save!

Creating a Mentor Relationship That Works

Both the mentor and the mentee contribute to the success of a mentoring relationship. Create the most productive relationship by following these tips.

BE A GOOD MENTOR

Acknowledge natural strengths and coach weaknesses. Listen for what your mentee’s doing right and for her own good ideas. Be honest about your thoughts for improvement.

Share your big lessons. Tell your own stories, good and bad, but most importantly, what you’ve learned from your experience.

Using Pinterest to Know Your Readers

Everyone loves Pinterest. But how can you use Pinterest to gain a better understanding of your readers and what they like. It's actually very simple. And best part is - you don't even need a Pinterest account to do it!

Here's how it works: Every time an image from your blog or a product from your shop is pinned, Pinterest adds that item to a feed of all user-pinned items from your blog/shop (this does not work for individual etsy shops unfortunately). To see what your readers are pinning take this URL (http://pinterest.com/source/creaturecomfortsblog.com), and substitute your URL in place of mine.

Finding a Mentor

Mentors can be invaluable—offering guidance, inspiration, perspective and motivation. How do you go about finding your own?

To find the right person, look for people in your industry who have blazed the very trail you’re traveling. They’re sure to save you from common mistakes. But keep your eyes open for successful people in any field. If you’re drawn to a person in another industry because of her personality, philosophy or approach to business, she certainly can teach you something to apply in your world.
