12 Striking Tendencies of Creative People

Creative people can be a little ... different. This article does a great job of explaining that creative people act different because they operate a little differently. Especially in the fact that they:
1) Are easily bored
A short attention span isn’t always a good thing, but it can indicate that the creative person has grasped one concept and is ready to go on to the next one.
2) Are willing to take risks
Because of the possibility of rejection, fearlessness is absolutely necessary for creating original work. Anything new requires a bit of change, and most of us don’t care for change that much.
3) Don’t like rules
Rules, to the creative person, are indeed made to be broken. They are created for us by other people, generally to control a process. The creative person needs freedom in order to work.

Thought provoking list. I consider myself a creative person but I would say I am not number one at all. I am never bored. It takes a lot to make me bored, mostly because I always find things to think about and create in my head. When I drive, I never listen to music or talk radio- I drive in silence and just create mental projects. The words, "I'm bored" have never left my mouth in my adult life. I don't remember what boredom feels like. I also am the worst collaborater. It makes me really anxious to do group projects.
I agree with the above commenter -- I'm never bored either! But I can see the point -- I have grown tired of projects when new and exciting ideas enter my brain!
This is an amazing blog post! I often stop by to check out your posts, but this one is particularly inspiring to me. Thank you, Kim for this. I'm reposting to my blog and Facebook!!
This is especially challenging for an art teacher. We work in institutions full of structure and rules. We need to create safe creative havens for children, and still be mindful of the needs of the larger community. The early part of my career was often a struggle between the creative/playful side and the rule-follower. At this point, I think I have found a balance. I have invented a playful structure in the art room, that seems to free my students artistically, but encourages a respectful attitude and an understanding of the only really essential rule, (the golden one).
For the most part, yes! yes! yes! I don't see anything about extroverted introverts in here though. I really think that it's a common trait for creative people. While we love being around people and can be super chatty, our energy comes from within ourselves so we HAVE to have alone time to recharge and create.
I agree with the others about boredom. I'm hardly ever bored...except when I HAVE to do things that I don't want to do or when something I'm doing takes longer than I want it to take. If every day I could just follow any whim I wanted, I would never be bored.
Note: If this were a movie, this would be the part where I post this comment and all of sudden I'm transported into a universe where I was allowed to follow all of my whims. Of course after all the fun (about 45 minutes or so into the movie) there would be a conflict, and by the last 15ish minutes I would realize that NOT being able to follow all your whims is actually a GOOD thing. :)
I love this! So good to know there's a positive reason for the ADD and that I'm not the only one! :)
I was such a hyperactive child. My mother HATED it. She still talks about it today. I'm so glad to know that my attitude and drive help set me up for creative things. :)
I love this! The Alt Blog content is looking awesome lately!
I can totally relate to #3 ~ Don't like rules! This is why I struggled so much working for other people — now that I'm my own boss, I am doing my best work and more passionate about what I'm doing than ever before! Finally, I get to make the rules ;)
I agree with all the above comments about creative people!
